SUMMARY:Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event Volunteering: October 4\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:The McLean County Household Hazardous Waste collection event being held on Saturday\, October 4 depends on the assistance of dozens of volunteers to run smoothly.  Please consider signing up for a shift to assist with traffic control or other needs. Shifts are from 7:30-10:30am\, 10:15-1:15pm\, and 1-4pm. We are especially looking for assistance for our afternoon and mid-day shifts. \nThe work requires spending the entire shift on one’s feet\, clear communication with event participants\, and some possible light lifting with equipment setup/take-down. This is a high traffic event with moving cars and equipment so all volunteers must be at least 18 years of age in order to participate. Volunteers will receive detailed instructions prior to the event.

SUMMARY:Herbicide Drift and Trespass: Impacts and Implications
DESCRIPTION:Kim Erndt-Pitcher\, director of ecological health for the Prairie Rivers Network (PRN)\, will present “Herbicide Drift and Trespass: Impacts and Implications\,” at 7 p.m. Wednesday\, October 8\, in room C101\, Center for Natural Science\, Illinois Wesleyan University\, 201 Beecher Street\, Bloomington. \nErndt-Pitcher’s presentation\, co-sponsored by the Grand Prairie Bird Alliance\, is free and open to the public. \nKim Erndt-Pitcher is the co-author of the study Hidden in Plain Sight: Herbicide Drift and Chemical Trespass: A Summary of 6 Years of Monitoring and Tissue Analysis. Erndt-Pitcher will summarize the results from the study and the steps that are needed to address this important issue. \nOver the past six years\, PRN has been monitoring symptoms of herbicide drift and damage to non-target broadleaf plants and trees across rural and urban Illinois. Herbicide drift — the movement of toxic chemicals through the air to a non-target site — is damaging wild and cultivated plants and trees throughout Illinois\, threatening human health\, and impairing our ability to adapt to a changing climate. The sources of drift are primarily from Illinois’ massive row crop industry but also include chemical lawn and turf treatments.

DESCRIPTION:The EAC’s compost workshop will cover the basics of backyard composting. You’ll learn basic techniques to build your compost pile\, discuss what materials to include\, and talk about what to do with compostable materials that don’t work in a backyard setting. This workshop will additionally help participants understand how to monitor and maintain their compost\, as well as how to know when their compost is done and safe to use! \n \nOur educators will provide resources for help identifying jumping worms\, and tips for using your compost bin\, thermometer\, and stirrer to keep them at bay. By the end of the workshop\, participants will have a sound understanding of the individual and community benefits of composting\, and can be confident about next steps to set up and monitor compost in their own backyard. \nFor $35 ($25 for EAC members) attendees get backyard composting best practices information and a basic compost bin from a repurposed 55-gallon drum to take home. For $110\, attendees get this same compost bin\, backyard composting best practices information\, a large thermometer to monitor compost pile temperature\, and an aerator for stirring their compost pile. \n \n*Workshop registration closes 3 days before the workshop.* \nThe Ecology Action Center will make reasonable accommodations for participation in public programs and services. SUMMARY:Native Gardening Mini-Sessions
DESCRIPTION:Enjoy some native gardening mini-sessions on October 20 from 7:00-8:30pm presented by the Illinois Prairie Chapter of Wild Ones. \nThis program will consist of three small group native gardening mini-sessions (approx. 15 minutes each) presented by chapter members Ann Schreifels\, Barry Lake and Janet Rasmussen. Program attendees will be split into groups and rotate between sessions and then reconvene as a large group for a question-and-answer session and further discussion. \nThe topics of these mini-sessions are: \nGoldenrods (by Ann Schreifels): Goldenrods are lauded for their late season blooms\, but also cursed because of the false belief they cause fall allergies to spike. While there are many ecosystem benefits to goldenrods\, not all are suited to home landscaping. This presentation will discuss several species and the characteristics that make them best suited for gardeners. Ann is a Master Naturalist and co-president of our chapter. She dove deep into the world of goldenrods to find the best ones for our area. \nNative Grasses for Birds (by Barry Lake): Many people can identify the birds that visit their backyards\, and some even know what birds eat which seed at a feeder! However\, when it comes to native prairies with their variety of grasses and other plants\, what birds are living there\, and what the birds are specifically using these plants for may not be as well known. This presentation will take an abbreviated look at several different types of prairie grasses and the birds that use them. Barry is a self-taught birder who enjoys the interconnection between birds and the wild areas they occupy. Having been a Wild One member for several years\, Barry has always visualized a “rewilding” of state areas that provide a safe haven for birds and wildlife by providing the natural habitat they instinctively seek. \nFall and Winter Landscaping Activities (by Janet Rasmussen): Fall and winter don’t need to be slow times in our yards. Janet will present a variety of activities that can be carried out during this time that can help make our yards more environmentally friendly. Janet has been an active member of the Illinois Prairie chapter since its founding in 2010 and has served in several capacities on the chapter’s Board. She has enjoyed seeing first-hand how both adding native plants to the home landscape and being a “messy” gardener are beneficial to the environment.

SUMMARY:Trash Tunes: Building Instruments From Trash
DESCRIPTION:Join the Ecology Action Center at 10:00am on January 3 at the Normal Public Library as we explore the true story behind “Ada’s Violin: The Story of the Recycled Orchestra of Paraguay” by Susan Hood. This colorful picture book tells how children in Cateura\, Paraguay\, turned trash from their town’s landfill into musical instruments! In this hands-on program\, kids will create their own instruments from recycled materials\, like drums and plastic bottle trumpets\, and then come together to play music as a group. It’s a fun way to learn about recycling and music!

SUMMARY:Angler's Lake Stakeholder Meetings: January 6 & 7 (5:30-7:00pm)
DESCRIPTION:Anglers Lake has benefited from stewardship efforts over the years by individuals\, the City of Bloomington\, and other partners\, and it continues to be a valued site for many in our community. Unfortunately\, native biodiversity at the site has declined as invasive species have spread and displaced native grasses\, forbs\, and shrubs. \nIn coordination with the City of Bloomington\, the Ecology Action Center (EAC) hopes to add Anglers Lake as a Sugar Creek Stewards workday location. The EAC currently supports stewardship at Fairview Park and Ewing II and has done so for many years. \nOur hope is to begin coordinating regular stewardship workdays at Anglers Lake next year to help implement a long-term management plan. To do this thoughtfully and collaboratively\, we want to bring together all existing groups and individuals to develop a shared\, mutually agreed-upon vision through a stakeholder process. We do not wish to intrude upon or override any ongoing efforts; rather\, our goal is to help formalize\, support\, and build upon the many years of dedication already invested in this site. \nTo that end\, we invite all interested to participate in a collaborative stakeholder process to help inform the development of a site management plan by a qualified professional contractor. These meetings will be held at the Bloomington Public Library\, Community Room 2\, on January 6 and January 7 from 5:30–7:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend one or both meetings. \nIf you are unable to attend\, but would still like to give input\, please email kvogler@ecologyactioncenter.org to receive a form for input. \nThe Ecology Action Center will make reasonable accommodations for participation in public programs and services. To request accommodation\, please call 309-454-3169×11 or go to ecologyactioncenter.org/accommodation. Please provide two weeks advance notice if possible.

SUMMARY:Grand Prairie Bird Alliance volunteer workday - let’s clean up Sugar Creek!
DESCRIPTION:Did you know that you can see bluebirds\, woodpeckers\, and so many other birds at the Illinois Art Station? This charming property at 101 E. Vernon includes a nice little forested area adjacent to Sugar Creek\, making it the perfect place for birds to meet their every day needs – native seeds to eat\, tree cavities for shelter\, and a creek for water. Windy weather has resulted in quite a bit of litter accumulating along the creek\, so help Grand Prairie Bird Alliance clean it up! The birds deserve better. Grand Prairie Bird Alliance will even provide hot chocolate. As a bonus\, the clean-up will correspond with the Art Station’s monthly free art hours\, so you can get inside to warm up and do some art as well! All are welcome. No skill required. \nWhen: Saturday\, January 24 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. \nWhere: Illinois Art Station\, 101 E. Vernon (ADA accessible parking off Vernon at the main entrance; additional parking off Linden right near the creek)
