Taking a Look at Prairie and its Reconstruction

August 14, 2017 @ 7:00 pm - 8:30 pm

In recent years there has been a growing interest in Illinois Native Tallgrass Prairie, which once dominated the Landscape, but has almost totally disappeared. As a result there have been numerous efforts to reconstruct some semblance of that prairie. Over forty years ago in northern Ford County near the village of Kempton a project to accomplish this started. Join Wild Ones on Monday, August 14th at 7:00 pm to hear about this restoration process.

Our Speaker, Don Gardner, an Independent Consultant, will share his experience of reconstruction of Prairie and give us a closer look at the process. During his childhood on a dairy farm he saw small populations of uncommon plants that once had been part of the vast Grand Prairie of Central Illinois. He returned to start a prairie reconstruction in 1974 and also published papers both scientific and general interest prairie articles over the years.

This event is free and open to the public. The Mennonite Church of Normal is a handicap accessible building.

Wild Ones is a national non-profit organization of local chapters promoting the use of native plants in home and urban landscapes. For more information on our local chapter, Illinois Prairie, please visit our website,

We look forward to seeing you there
