You are invited to “Zymurgy,” a celebration of local beer, food and people, hosted by the Ecology Action Center.  This event will take place on Thursday, June 2, from 6:00-8:00 pm at the Bloomington-Normal Marriott in Uptown Normal.

Guests will sample locally brewed beer from Destihl (including Belgian Ales, Sours, and special draft-only selections) and learn about craft beer and home brewing.  The Marriott culinary staff will craft a backyard barbeque style menu made from fresh, locally grown ingredients with meatless options available.  Live music will be provided by local favorites Bruce Bergethon and Tom Ricker. A silent auction will feature many interesting and unique brew-centric items for your consideration; Beer aficionados (aka Beer Snobs) will not be disappointed.

This event will also include the presentation of the EAC’s annual Green Awards: the McLean County Recycling Award to recognize outstanding efforts in waste reduction and the Anne McGowan Making a World of Difference Award for significant environmental achievements in our community.

Tickets are $40 per person, and may be purchased using the form below. The deadline for ticket sales is Friday, May 27.  This event is a fundraiser for the Ecology Action Center; all proceeds help support the important work by the EAC to improve our local environment.

What is Zymurgy?!

“Zymurgy” is the traditional art of fermentation.  This is the science that allows beer to be possible–a metabolic process of converting sugars from barley or other grains into alcohol.  That is, you can take a fairly universal ingredient (grains), mix with some other fairly simple ingredients, apply some heat, and then add  the crucial part–some live biological material (yeast).  Give it some time, and this simple process produces some very positive results–beer!
We could argue that our work is similar to this process.  Our original work (recycling operations) involved some fairly simple materials that had no value if they were thrown away in the landfill as had been done for decades before.  But when we mixed these simple ingredients (waste materials) with some heat (hard work), some crucial biological material (people and partnerships), and some time (patience), together we were able to build what are now fairly impressive recycling systems in our community.
This recipe works so well that we applied it to other issues like clean water, energy efficiency, and increasingly efforts for clean air.   You may know that while our funding comes from many different sources, a majority of our revenue comes from contracts with our local governments to assist them in meeting state and federal environmental mandates.  However, these are lean shoe-string budgets to address basic needs at the lowest cost possible.  But that’s not our mission nor our model–we want to facilitate real long-term change in our community for a healthy environment for us all.  Meeting the bare minimum is not sufficient in this day and age with so many environmental challenges confronting us.
This is where the beer comes in.  A fun fundraiser involving local beer is a win-win for us all. This is how it works–you come to Zymurgy, sample some great local beers and local food, maybe bid on a fun item from the silent auction, and have a lot of fun with other EAC supporters, the EAC board, staff, and volunteers.  Your ticket price and any other contributions to this event help us raise funding to continue to go above and beyond in our work to improve the local environment.  Your help is critical to allow us to continue to push the envelope for environmental improvement.

Ticket Sales Closed May 27.  No tickets available at the door.
