What happens when it’s time to say goodbye as they melt on the porch? \nGreen up Halloween by recycling pumpkins into compost at a free\, outdoor Pumpkin Smash offered from 10 am to 2 pm and Rader Family Farms in Normal. \nNo cost or registration is required to attend. DESCRIPTION:Interested in joining the Illinois Grand Prairie Master Naturalists Program? Then read on and submit an application here: https://registration.extension.illinois.edu/start/illinois-grand-prairie-master-naturalist-application-fall-2025  \n  \nThe mission of the Master Naturalist program is to provide science-based educational opportunities that connect people with nature and help them become engaged environmental stewards. Illinois Extension is excited to host the Fall training course from August 24 through November 15. Meetings will be weekly online together via zoom on Wednesday evenings from 6:00-7:30pm. Additionally\, there will be weekend field trips at various locations throughout McLean\, Livingston\, and Woodford Counties for hands-on learning. Those dates are listed below: \n\nSeptember 6\nSeptember 27\nOctober 11\nOctober 25\n\nThis training course will be a hybrid model that includes weekly self-paced reading materials\, videos\, live online lectures\, hikes\, and more. \nTwenty-five trainees will be accepted for the new class. The process begins when you complete the form below to indicate your interest in starting the program. After registration an interview process for the Master Naturalists volunteer program will occur. \nAfter the interview\, all accepted volunteers will be asked to complete the required background screenings and pay the $250 course fee. \nRegistration closes on August 3 or when class fills. \nFor any questions\, please reach out to Natural Resources\, Environment\, and Energy Educator\, Darci Webber at dlwebber@illinois.edu or by calling (309) 663-8306.

DESCRIPTION:Celebrate Earth Day with the University of Illinois Extension and partners in an exciting day full of hands-on workshops designed to inspire young minds and foster a love for our planet! Children ages 8-13 are invited to join us for a series of engaging activities focused on sustainability\, conservation\, and environmental creativity. Hosted by the Parklands Foundation\, Ecology Action Center\, University of Illinois McLean County Extension\, McLean County Ag in the Classroom\, and Illinois Art Station\, this event is sure to be an unforgettable experience.\nWorkshop Offerings Include:\n\nSave the Splash: Water Adventure – Dive into the wonders of water\, one of our most important and abundant resources.\nTrashion Fashion – Get inspired by Sydney-based artist Marina DeBris and make it work. Learn how to upcycle materials into unique wearables\, reduce waste\, and promote sustainability in the fashion industry.\nWonderful Wind Power – Explore the power of the wind and learn how it can be used to create energy in this hands-on workshop! Youth will get the chance to build their very own wind-powered device\, learning the basics of renewable energy and how wind turbines work.\nSquirm and Learn: Vermicomposting – Do you love playing in the dirt and all things bugs? Then come learn about everyone’s favorite underground creature\, the worm! Learn about what makes a good habitat for worms\, how worms are different from humans\, and how worms help to turn food scraps into nutrients for plants. Students will get the chance to not only learn but put it into action as they help harvest compost from the worm bin and set up their new habitat.\nFeathers\, Fur\, Scales\, and Slime: Animal Exteriors – Animals don’t get to choose what covers their skin. Nature has decided. Their colors\, patterns\, and textures give them safety as well as style! Learn what animals wear and how that helps them survive.\n\nEach workshop is designed to be fun\, interactive\, and educational\, offering kids the chance to get their hands dirty and their imaginations flowing while learning how they can make a positive impact on the environment. \nEach one-hour session is $5.00 per family. \nThere is a 30-minute lunch break.
