SUMMARY:Angler's Lake Stakeholder Meetings: January 6 & 7 (5:30-7:00pm)
DESCRIPTION:Anglers Lake has benefited from stewardship efforts over the years by individuals\, the City of Bloomington\, and other partners\, and it continues to be a valued site for many in our community. Unfortunately\, native biodiversity at the site has declined as invasive species have spread and displaced native grasses\, forbs\, and shrubs. \nIn coordination with the City of Bloomington\, the Ecology Action Center (EAC) hopes to add Anglers Lake as a Sugar Creek Stewards workday location. The EAC currently supports stewardship at Fairview Park and Ewing II and has done so for many years. \nOur hope is to begin coordinating regular stewardship workdays at Anglers Lake next year to help implement a long-term management plan. To do this thoughtfully and collaboratively\, we want to bring together all existing groups and individuals to develop a shared\, mutually agreed-upon vision through a stakeholder process. We do not wish to intrude upon or override any ongoing efforts; rather\, our goal is to help formalize\, support\, and build upon the many years of dedication already invested in this site. \nTo that end\, we invite all interested to participate in a collaborative stakeholder process to help inform the development of a site management plan by a qualified professional contractor. These meetings will be held at the Bloomington Public Library\, Community Room 2\, on January 6 and January 7 from 5:30–7:00 p.m. All are welcome to attend one or both meetings. \nIf you are unable to attend\, but would still like to give input\, please email kvogler@ecologyactioncenter.org to receive a form for input. \nThe Ecology Action Center will make reasonable accommodations for participation in public programs and services. SUMMARY:Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event Volunteering: October 4\, 2025
DESCRIPTION:The McLean County Household Hazardous Waste collection event being held on Saturday\, October 4 depends on the assistance of dozens of volunteers to run smoothly.  Please consider signing up for a shift to assist with traffic control or other needs. Shifts are from 7:30-10:30am\, 10:15-1:15pm\, and 1-4pm. We are especially looking for assistance for our afternoon and mid-day shifts. \nThe work requires spending the entire shift on one’s feet\, clear communication with event participants\, and some possible light lifting with equipment setup/take-down. This is a high traffic event with moving cars and equipment so all volunteers must be at least 18 years of age in order to participate. Volunteers will receive detailed instructions prior to the event.

DESCRIPTION:The Ecology Action Center is holding its 22nd annual Yard Smart Garden Walk on Saturday\, July 19 from 9:00am – 1:00pm. This FREE tour highlights beautiful and functional yards in our community that protect our environment\, benefit wildlife\, and use few or no synthetic chemicals. The tour features multiple home gardens of different styles. The walk will conclude with lunch and a speaker. This event is free\, but our staff works hard to make this event happen\, so we do encourage donations to help offset the cost of the event and to help the Ecology Action Center continue its efforts to promote a healthy local environment! More information on the Yard Smart program as well as a set of free resource fact sheets is available at YardSmart.org. \nParticipants should bring their own reusable water bottles\, and dress for the weather. Participants are encouraged to carpool to conserve fossil fuels and reduce pollution\, so check with your friends/family to see if they are going\, and consider riding to the event with them. We will send event details to registered participants closer to the event date. Sign up below to reserve your spot. \nThe Yard Smart program promotes a more sustainable approach to lawn and garden maintenance. Working with nature to build a healthier ecosystem in both the soil below ground\, the yard above ground\, and reducing pollutants that runoff into our local water supplies will create a more beautiful\, sustainable and safer environment for everyone— children and adults\, pets and wildlife. The program encourages local homeowners to reduce the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides\, to conserve natural resources such as water and fossil fuels\, and to make room for wildlife in their yards. Yard Smart Certification recognizes local homeowners who use ecologically sustainable practices in maintaining their yards and who realize that their lawn\, garden and landscaping decisions affect the health of the whole community.

This month volunteers will be assisting in cleaning up near Sugar creek off of South Center Street in Normal. \nWe thank you for offering your time to help clean a site that provides shelter to individuals experiencing homelessness. Please note that this site is home to members of our community\, and as such\, we ask that all volunteers approach this work with compassion\, respect\, and an open heart. \nWe kindly request that you leave any judgment or discrimination aside\, recognizing that the residents here are human beings with unique stories and experiences. This volunteer opportunity is about creating a safe\, clean\, and dignified environment for all\, and we appreciate your commitment to treating everyone with the utmost respect. \nYour involvement is crucial in fostering a sense of community and supporting our collective well-being. Bring children grades 2nd and up to the Carlock Public Library on Tuesday May 6\, 2025 at 5:30pm to learn about vermicomposting! Students will get the chance to see these worms at work\, learn about how worms differ from humans\, and maybe even feel them squirm on their hand. No registration is required.

SUMMARY:mCLEAN Up Crew Workday: May 6\, 2025 (9-12pm) @ ISU Farm
DESCRIPTION:mCLEAN Up Crew volunteers are a group dedicated to helping keep our community clean of trash. Volunteers will use provided trash grabbers\, gloves\, and trash bags to remove litter from the ISU Farm. The ISU Farm is where all Town of Normal yard waste goes to be composted. This means that any contaminates/trash that enter into the yard waste enters into the farm and can blow to surrounding farmers fields. \nVolunteers must be 18+ years old or 12-17 with a parent or guardian present. Volunteers must be able to spend three hours on their feet and carry a weight of 10-15 pounds. A confirmation email and location information will be communicated on the Monday prior to the workday. All equipment will be provided\, but you will need your own transportation.
