In September 2026, the United Nations warned that limiting climate change to a moderate 1.5°C (2.7°F) above pre-industrial levels in no longer realistic under current greenhouse gas emissions trajectories.
While the Ecology Action Center recently completed its Community Energy Strategic Plan for Bloomington, Normal, and McLean County, Illinois developed through a collaborative stakeholder process as a roadmap to local greenhouse gas emissions reduction, the more urgent priority is working towards climate adaptation and resilience for our community. This means identifying identifying and implementing strategies to protect communities, infrastructure, and ecosystems against climate impacts that can no longer be avoided.
The EAC had already begun efforts in such planning but in March 2025 the United States Environmental Protection Agency terminated a nearly $500,000 grant awarded to the EAC for a local partnership project designated as the Bloomington-Normal Climate Responsive Community initiative.
The EAC continues to find other funding to continue this critical effort but options are extremely limited at this time. As such, the Ecology Action Center is seeking private donations towards our McLean County Climate Resilience Fund. As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, donations to the EAC are tax-deductible to the extent allowable by law.
Please consider making a generous contribution within your means to support climate resilience in our community.
