Job Opening: Fulltime Tree Coordinator

Tree Coordinator

The Tree Coordinator is a full-time hourly position with health insurance and paid time off including vacation time, sick time, and holidays.  Specific responsibilities may vary and are subject to change dependent upon funding opportunities. The position is contingent upon program funding.

This position focuses on coordinating the volunteer-based Tree Corps initiative, working to plant 10,000 trees a year in McLean County, Bloomington, and Normal. Candidates must have strong skills in verbal and written communications and project management.  Educational background in environmental health, horticulture, biology, ecology, or environmental studies is desirable along with familiarity with relevant technology, software, and equipment operation.  All applicants must have a valid driver’s license.

Major responsibilities

  1. Presentations to community groups to promote Tree Corps, recruit volunteers, and solicit donations.
  2. Cultivation of new tree planting partnerships with community groups, and public and private organizations.
  3. Monitoring and management of existing tree planting projects.
  4. Planning of new tree planting projects.
  5. Recruitment and coordination of volunteers at tree planting or maintenance workdays.
  6. Management of Ecology Action Center tree nursery.
  7. Educate residents at community events through information booths.
  8. Creation of educational content and messaging to promote program objectives.
  9. Creation of promotional materials and campaigns for fundraising for the Tree Corps fund.
  10. Identification of and application for new funding sources such as carbon credits.
  11. Coordinating conservation easements for tree plantings.
  12. Promoting programs and events of the EAC, working with interns and volunteers to facilitate programs of the EAC, staffing the center including answering phone calls, greeting the public, distributing informational materials, and assisting with the regular running of the center.

Minor responsibilities include landscaping and minor maintenance at the EAC offices, fleet and equipment management/maintenance.

Weekend and evening hours are required including frequent weekend workdays during spring or fall tree planting seasons. Position is considered to be onsite and in-person at the Ecology Action Center offices at 202 W College Avenue, Normal, Illinois 61761 and at various tree planting projects around the greater community.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree. Preferred course of study in communications, environmental health, horticulture, biology, ecology, or environmental studies.
  • 3 years of experience in nontraditional education and/or community outreach with varied age groups and other demographics
  • Strong communication skills required, both written and verbal
  • Coursework, certificate and/or extensive experience in Geospatial Technologies, ArcGIS, etc. required
  • Experience and high degree of comfort with other web and computer technologies: spreadsheets, social media, WordPress, databases, CRM, etc.
  • Ability to work occasional long hours and irregular schedules to accommodate programmatic needs
  • Ability to stand for 4 or more hours at a time
  • Ability to lift up to 25 pounds
  • Must provide own transportation, automobile insurance, and have a satisfactory driving record
  • Experience and training in pulling trailers or operating tractors, skid steers, and other heavy equipment experience highly desirable

The Ecology Action Center is a not-for-profit environmental agency with a mission to inspire and assist residents of McLean County in creating, strengthening and preserving a healthy environment. The EAC acts as a central resource for environmental education, information, outreach, and technical assistance in McLean County.
