Smoke detectors, while hazardous due to radioactive components, are NOT normally collected at Household Hazardous Waste Collection events. Many sources recommend mailing them back to the manufacturer for proper disposal.
In addition, there are fee-based mail back programs that can accommodate disposal of several old smoke detectors at one time.
